Is Joe Biden the Right Choice for a Digital Era?
Some of us might have been impressed with Senator Barack Obama’s decision to notify registered users who his selected VP running mate would be. At 3am Saturday morning, for those who actually signed up did receive the text “from” the senator with the big news. But while the Presidential Candidate Barack Obama seems to be embracing the digital era, Joe Biden as repeatedly fought it and sided with Hollywood and copyright protection agencies.
In 2002, Biden endorsed a bill that would make it a felony to “trick” certain types of mobile devices to play unauthorized duplicated music or computers to execute copied or “unapproved” applications software. Although, Verizon, Microsoft, Apple, eBay and Yahoo all fought the bill and successfully denied its approval.
In 2007, Biden supported an RIAA-backed bill designed to restrict consumers’ ability to record and play back songs from satellite and online radio services.
Biden was also 1-of-4 Senators invited to celebrate the Digital Millenium Copyright Act hosted by the MPAA, the RIAA and the Business Software Alliance. The act was designed to criminalize individuals who create or use software/ devices designed to crack copyrighted devices or media. (For full act details click here).
Finally, Joe’s bills essentially lead to the PGP, a global security software company, which is the leader in email and data encryption solutions for enterprise data protection.
How will he affect our progress and development with all of these different digital barriers?
